Web Hosting Costs
Web hosting costs depend on the
following: 1. The amount of file
storage space you need. The more pages and image and other kinds
of files that make up your website, the more file
storage you will need. 2. The amount of web server traffic
(bandwidth) your website generates. Bandwidth usage is a
calculation of the number of people who are accessing
your website and the amount of time they spend reading
your page. Like long-distance 1-800 telephone service,
you pay for the amount of time people spend calling you
up. The more popular your website becomes, the more
bandwidth you will use and the more your web hosting
will cost. 3. The special features you
require: email service, database storage, shopping
carts, etc. will also cost more. |
Web
Hosting
Web Hosting - What is it? Why do you
need it?
A website is a collection of individual
files. Each page is a file. Each image is a file. All
the download files on your website -- press
releases, company brochures, sales flyers -- are files.
Files take up computer space, whether on your on
personal computer or on a web server.
Without web hosting, all you have are a bunch of files
on a personal computer with nowhere to go. For the world to see those files on the
Internet, they have to be loaded to a web server, which
as the name implies, is a computer that serves up those
files whenever anyone clicks on a link to the file or asks for
it by name or IP address.
Many large companies maintain
their own servers for internal and external network
files and hire
computer people to watch over everything -- to make sure
the internal
files don't go out on the Internet, to make sure the
internal and external server computers are operational,
to backup the files on the servers for when it (and it
usually will) fails, etc., etc. Smaller businesses and individuals
usually do not have the resources to hire a computer staff or buy
server computers, so they rent server space from hosting
companies. Some businesses rent external server space to
backup all their business files. Some businesses only
rent external server space for Internet website files.
We're a small business and we prefer not
to deal with server issues, so we buy web hosting server
space for our own website. We consider costs and
reliability carefully when we choose a hosting service
for our business. We also choose hosting carefully for
client websites because when we build a
website, we want the world to see it 24/7/365.
We also keep in mind
that server space is an ongoing business expense,
so we design web pages for economy of file size and help clients choose the right amount of
server hosting space and bandwidth so they don't pay
more than necessary.
