Domain Registrars

There are many domain sellers (called "registrars") out there in Internet Land, so it pays to shop around. Do a search for "domain name," "domain names," and "domain registrar," in any search engine and check out the registrars that seem to offer good prices.

However, be wary of any registrar that require you to buy a long-term or expensive hosting package to get a cheap domain price. Several places sell domain for under $10/year. You get the same product regardless of whether you pay $10/year or $30/year -- the right to use that domain name for however many years you keep paying. The cost of a domain varies greatly, so it pays to shop around.

Now, a few words about what you're buying. You are not actually buying the name; you're buying a license to use that domain name on the world wide web for a specific period of time. Domain names are a little like car license tags -- pay yearly and you can keep driving. Forget to pay and somebody else will grab your special plates.

Domain Names

Naming your website is as hard as naming your child. Maybe harder. So, how do you do it? Here's how:

  • Make a list -- your business's name, the products or services you offer, and all the terms people might use to search for your business or your products.

  • Decide which words the majority of potential customers will use to find you. If you are an established business, customers may search for you by name. If you are a start-up with limited name recognition, may want to do both -- get a domain name for the business and one for the product, then cross-link the domains.

  • Once you decide on a domain name or several names, go shopping -- online, of course!

Once you've found your domain name, buy it, that very minute, even if you're not yet ready to build your website. Why? Because it might not be available later. If you think of a better name later on, buy it as well. Then build your website on one name and redirect the other name so that whichever name is searched for winds up at your site. If the name you want is available as .com and .net, buy both so you don't have a competitor using the same name. If you're an "organization" (church, club, etc) rather than an individual or business, buy the .org.
